Loreto Scicluna awarded ‘Ġieħ Għajnsielem’
Mayor Francis Cauchi awarded the 18th edition of the ‘Premju Ġieħ Għajnsielem’ to Loreto Scicluna, commending his achievement with the Ghajnsielem Football Club as a player, administration and archivist.
Loreto Scicluna, born in Gozo August 6, 1964, son of Carmel and Mary Scicluna, and brother of Antoinette and Joseph started his career with Għajnsielem F.C. in 1977. He made his debut for the senior team in 1981. After emigrating to Canada, his playing career resumed in 1993 and a season later he became team captain, a role he served until 2004. He played in several different positions during his career and won several cup competitions with the club including the 04/05 championship winning squad. Loreto was chosen as the G.F.A. Footballer of the Year (94/95) and the Club’s footballer of the year (96/97, 98/99). He retired at the end of the 05/06 season.
Since 1994, Loreto has assisted the committee of Għajnsielem F.C. in administrative matters. He started coaching in the Club’s Youth Nursery in 2010. He is part of the coaching staff of the Għajnsielem Redcoats, the new baseball and softball club. He is also involved in Għajnsielem Fit4Life, an entity that collaborates with the Għajnsielem Local Council in the organization of sports initiatives co-funded by the Local Council and the K.M.S. Loreto’s ongoing interest in the history of Għajnsielem F.C. is the source for a number of publications on the history of the Club and for the content and daily maintenance of the official Club website www.ghajnsielemfc.com, now in its tenth year of existence.
Mayor Francis Cauchi handed the award during a special ceremony held at the Grand Hotel banquet hall. During his speech, the Mayor praised Mr Scicluna for his dedication to Għajnsielem F.C. and the development of sports in Ghajnsielem. The mayor reminded the present guests about the valuable contribution that volunteers give towards society and encouraged the youths to appreciate and follow Loreto Scicluna’s footsteps.
On his part, Loreto Scicluna recalled some of his favourite moments with the Ghajnsielem Football Club while emphasizing the need to add further professionalism in the structure of the club. Loreto Scicluna thanked his family for their continues support and urged today’s youth to get more involved in the sports.
