Ghajn tal-Hasselin’s replica inaugurated
The project of the restoration of the historic “Ghajn tal-Hasselin” in the heart of Apparition Square, Ghajnsielem has been inaugurated yesterday Sunday 22nd February 2015 by Hon Minister Anton Refalo.
The project conducted by the Ghajnsielem Local Council which costed €70,000, has been funded by an EcoGozo scheme. The first commemorative stone of this project was laid in December 2012.
The project has been carried out under the supervision of Architect Edward Scerri. The project initiated by excavation works which were carried out under the strict supervision of an archaeologist from the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage. Part of the original works including the back and side wall, and part of the flooring of the original “Ghajn tal-Hasselin” were discovered during these excavations. An opening leading to a World War II shelter was also discovered thereat. A small Belveder overlooking Apparition Square has also been built on top of the “Ghajn”.
The original “Ghajn tal-Hasselin” from which originated the name of Ghajnsielem was built by Grandmaster Ramon Perellos in 1710 and was taken down in 1953.
The official inauguration’s programme included a dance by the Folkgroup ‘Sinnet’ and instrumental music by a folkloristic gozitan band. Speeches by Ghajnsielem Mayor Francis Cauchi and Minister for Gozo Anton Refalo were delivered followed by the official inauguration and blessing.
